EMS Warnings Signs of Stroke Awareness

by

Jane Beckham

As the warning signs of a stroke are being better understood and awareness increases, changes are also being made within emergency medical services (EMS) systems across the country. Getting treatment to a stroke victim as quickly as possible is paramount to their survival.

This is where the national Emergency Medical Services (EMS) stroke awareness comes in. They are implementing an ongoing stroke awareness and support campaign that aims to educate and empower the entire medical services infrastructure that may be called upon to support and treat a stroke victim. They are also aiming at educating the public to be better informed and able to identify early warning signs of stroke and corresponding stroke symptoms.

The more common warning signs of a stroke include the following symptoms:

Sudden weakness or numbness in face, arm or leg on one side of the body.

Sudden dimness or loss of vision, particularly in one eye.

Loss of speech, trouble talking or trouble understanding speech. Many stroke victims say they know something is happening but are unable to get the words out to tell anyone or that when they do speak, it is mumbled and undistinguishable as speech.

Sudden severe headaches with no apparent cause.

Feeling dizzy or unsteady or being unable to stand up, particularly if linked with any of the above symptoms.

Fortunately, the EMS is being packaged as a complete support system, which will ultimately lead to a better response and increased chance of recovery for all stroke victims. The package includes roles at all levels of support from medical researchers, through to the people handling the emergency calls and the medical dispatchers and paramedics.

Various studies and surveys have found that a stroke victim does not get the medical attention they need for at least 2 hours after they have suffered the stroke. This is largely due to the emergency services not being informed of their situation quickly enough. So it’s vital that people are better able to identify the warning signs of a stroke and call the emergency services as quickly as possible.

Once they receive the call for help, the EMS have a very streamlined system in place to ensure that the victim gets the support and medical attention very quickly, but they are unable to put any of this into practise until they are made aware of the case.

They are able to assess patients on the spot and make informed judgements due to their knowledge of stroke symptoms, and are able to make detailed reports to physicians and medical departments on route to hospital. The end result is a very streamlined and efficient service for identifying signs of a stroke, managing the stroke symptoms and increasing the odds of survival and recovery for the victim.

The odds of stroke recovery and even survival of a stroke victim is largely dependent on how quickly they are treated, and the abilities of the medical team supporting them. Care of a stroke victim begins with the patient recognising the warnings signs of a stroke and the various stroke symptoms, and calling the emergency services as fast as possible.
