Corruption is a great social evil and we must eradicate it – is preached by all the Politicians and Political Leaders of this Country at each and every Public Forum but now when the People of the Country are demanding that a strong law in the form of LOKPAL BILL be brought and passed in Parliament every Political Party is escaping from the responsibility and trying to find one excuse or the other to avoid supporting the movement of Anna Hazare in this direction. Should the people of this Country arrive at a conclusion that the elected political leaders have come to the Parliament to serve their own interests in stead of serving the masses after securing their votes by making false promises?
Political leaders occupying the ministerial berths are now pleading that they are elected representatives of the people and the unelected people led by Anna Hazare have no right to guide them. They have conveniently forgotten that they are occupying these chairs due to the votes cast by these people. They also lost sight of the fact that they secured just 28.55% votes in 2009 General Elections and lack the support of remaining 71.45% voters. Democracy means Government of the people, by the people and for the people as defined by Abraham Lincoln- former US President. It is for the people of India to judge and convince themselves whether the Government formed by a Political Party securing 28.55% votes truly represents the people of the Country and can be termed as Government of the People as defined in the definition of Democracy-thanks to the concept of Multi Party System adopted in the Indian Constitution with a motive to practice the Policy of Divide & Rule – inherited in legacy from British Empire. In most of the Countries of World there is Bi-Party System. In U.S.A there are two parties- Democrats & Republicans, even in U.K-Labour & Conservatives are two Political parties. Parliamentarians of this Country need to rise above their petty interests and scrap the multi party system to pave way for the Bi Party System to forge unity among the masses and put an end to the era of Hung Parliament or Coalition Governments to check menace of corruption and provide strong and stable Govt. at the Centre capable of fighting terrorism.
Our Political Leaders should not forget that Key elements to the Democratic form of Government are (a) Guarantee of basic human rights (b) Freedom of opinion and speech & press and (c) good governance with focus on public interest and absence of corruption. After winning the Election and coming into power they can not abdicate their voters. In a Poll of 19 Nations conducted by A World Public Opinion Org. 85% agreed that the Will of the People should be the basis for the authority of the Government as a principle enunciated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The perception that Governments are not responsive to the Popular Will appears to be contributing to the low levels of confidence in Governments formed around the World -Mr. Steven Kull, Director of World Public Opinion Org. commented. 74% endorsed the view that the Public should have ongoing influence on Government decisions and not at Election time only.
Persons holding responsible Government Positions should not primarily serve big interests as is being done now, rather should serve the people as a whole and make strong law to be implemented through separate set up of Courts in the form of Lok Pal at the Centre and Lokayukts in the States throughout the Country so as to book all corrupt persons big or small to restore their confidence in Government lest the Public at large may lose patience and rise in revolt.
